Les Boukakes - The new generation of raï
Formed 7 years ago, Les Boukakes is made up of 7 guys:
Bachir, the voice of the band, Thierry, the Corsican
guitarist, Steph' with the keyboards called the occitan,
Bubulle, bass player from the North of France, Imed,
Tunisian derboukist and Pascal, drummer from the South
of France. The whole sound system is supervised by the
Italian technician of the team, Massimo.
The Exile gave birth to the “Boukake”
Their name itself is a reply to some of the less than
friendly comments they received in their time on the
streets, ”Boukake” being a phonetic mixture of two
typical racist insults. But for them, that did not have
anything of degrading, because the “Boukake” was born
during the long trip of exile, a rich child of the world
and its prohibited loves. Without making ostensible
political comments in their songs, this deliberate
attitude says something for their resistance to bias and
ignorance generally.
After a few years, from the street to the bars, from
small concerts to festivals, they finally met their
audience, sharing the stages with famous bands like Femi
Kuti, Manu Dibango, Rimit, Natacha Atlas, Rachid Taha,
Manu Chao and others. In 2001, they recorded the album
Makach Mouch'kil (No Problem). Their first album got a
great reception from the media. The lyrics with oriental
melodies harmoniously swing on musics either rock,
groove, electronic, raï or gnawa.
But it was in 2004 that their music (raï 'n' rock) was
spotted. They won professional prizes (FAIR, Découvertes
Printemps de Bourges) and the European TV channel
ARTE chose to follow thier development for a
documentary. The release of their second album "Bledi"
resulted in a showcase at Womex 2005, the biggest world
music fair in Europe. To share the new album with the
audience, the band went on tour with more than 150
concerts in 15 different countries. At the end of the
year Les Boukakes was nominated for the BBC World
Music Award 2007. The raï and rock music of "Bledi"
proves that the combination of Orient and Occident is
possible and it can in fact be happy!
"Bledi" was released by Atlas Music pro in Austria,
Germany and Switzerland in April 2007.
“If there’s any justice, you’re going to be hearing
lots of them in the near future.” fROOTS
„Les
Boukakes, with a lead singer from Algeria and members
from Tunisia and France, put rock dynamics behind
impassioned lyrics about social conditions and the long,
gutsy vocal lines of Algerian raï music.“ The New

Antonio Porto
was born in Campo Grande in the state Mato Grosso,
Brazil. He started his career as composer, guitar–
and bass player, percussionist and singer in São Paulo
and Rio de Janeiro, where he worked with well known
Brazilian artists such as Renato Teixeira or the „Familia
Espindola“. His manifold talent he demonstrated in over
50 CD productions. At the end of the 1980ies he decided
to move to Europe, in order to gain further
professional experience and to broaden his spectrum in
the field of music.
Antonio Porto found his new home in Vienna, Austria,
where he, at first, stayed within the environment of
Brazilian music. Among others, he founded a band
together with the well known guitar player Alegre
Correa (Joe Zawinul Syndicate) and co-arranged
Célia Mara’s debut album. It is the encounter
with the famous Israeli-Austrian singer Timna Brauer
and the Israeli pianist Eli Meiri that opens him
up a new world of music. As their guitar- and bass
player he joins the ensemble and tours through Europe,
Israel, Africa and the United States. His new experience
finds its way into his work in Austria and Brazil. He
plays on several albums, among others, for accordion
virtuoso Otto Lechner and world musician
Hubert von Goisern. The latter invites him to become
part of his band. Concert tours to Egypt, Cape Verde,
Senegal and Burkina Faso follow and Antonio Porto gets
to play with world famous musicians such as Mohammed
Mounir, Falou Djeim and Simenteira.
Album „Nômade“
In 2004, Antonio Porto returns to his home town in Mato
Grosso to find the atmosphere and tranquillity to
compose the songs for his first own album. A few
months later, he produces „Nômade“ – a musical
travel diary that leads from Brazil via Austria to
Africa and Israel. In his compositions Antonio Porto
traces back Afro-Brazilian pop to its roots in West
Africa. Impressively he plays all instruments himself
and especially his guitar- and bass solo parts show his
virtuosity. His sentimental and at the same time groovy
performance, together with his harmonious voice draw the
pictures of his journey – from the mysterious Austrian
mountains to the vastness of the Sahara. In his poetical
and spiritual lyrics he uses nature images to describe
the beauty, but also destruction and inhumanity in this
world. The traditional Jewish song “Avinu Malkeinu” and
“Da Diab” - a composition by Hubert von Goisern, sang in
the local dialect of Bad Goisern - complete the musical
diary.
„Nômade“ was released in June 2006
by the Austrian independent world music label Atlas
Music pro. In September 2006, Antonio Porto, who is
currently living in Brazil, presented
his new album at Porgy & Bess.
